Performance within easy reach
Over the last two decades, the needs of the construction industry have constantly been evolving towards materials which are more reliable, easier to handle, with great performance and attention to aesthetics.
Aluminous cements play a major role in the development of these new products.
Indeed, the ability to control setting and hardening times, rapid drying, compensation for shrinkage as well as a flexible choice of colours are just some of the benefits made possible by calcium aluminates, which best meet modern technical specifications for the most diverse applications in the building chemistry industry.
These numerous properties for calcium aluminate applications have made it a preferred technology for mortar formulators.
_ Calcium aluminates’ ability to combine with other mineral or organic components and the ongoing development of mixing technology is now favouring the development of innovative materials, offering safe performance and ease of use, enabling faster opening to traffic and quicker completion of work, consequently increasing building productivity.
VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS
Over the years, Kerneos has always focused on understanding the interactions of aluminous cement with other components in the formulation to improve the wear properties of the finished product.
At the same time, thanks to its permanent presence in construction markets, Kerneos has acquired marketing and technical experience enabling it to meet specific customer issues, helping its partners to remain technology leaders in their industry.
Used as pure binding agents (i.e. not mixed with other mineral binders), aluminous cements offer many advantages over Portland cements. They are distinguished firstly by an equivalent setting time followed by rapid hardening, and secondly by much higher resistance to corrosion and abrasion.
Mixed in different proportions with Portland cement, calcium sulphate and additives, they offer unique properties to the most demanding formulations in building chemistry:
Adjustable setting time
Fast hardening
Fast drying
Shrinkage control
Excellent mechanical performance
Choice of colours.
These different properties of aluminous cements allow construction chemistry formulators to develop products tailored to widely varying applications:
Floor preparation and surface-laying systems
Screed
Coatings for floor-sealing and smoothing
Adhesives and joints for tiling and natural stone

Mortars for repair and finishing
Concrete repair mortars
Protective mortars
Air- and water-tight sealing mortars
Joint-sealing mortars
Affixing mortars

Wall priming and finishing
Coating for wall sealing
Paint coatings
Smoothing mortars
Adhesives and joints for tiling and natural stone

TERNAL ® RANGE: EXTRA SMOOTHNESS ...
To meet the specific needs of building chemistry formulators in terms of smoothness, colour and responsiveness, Kerneos has developed the Ternal® range, offering a broad range of characteristics giving rise to specifications guaranteed by the Quality Management System:
- Responsiveness
The responsiveness of aluminous cements essentially depends on their mineralogical composition, their fineness and distribution of particle sizes. As the CA and C12A7 phases are the main reactive phases, specifications have been defined for the C12A7/CA ratio of all products in the TERNAL® range.
At the same time, Kerneos has invested in highly effective production equipment, process management tools, and quality control systems.
- Colours and aesthetic properties
As the aesthetic properties of a material are an integral part of their quality, in some applications the colour of calcium aluminates becomes an important selection criterion. This is why special attention is paid to this factor and colour specifications have been defined for the TERNAL® product range specifically for the most sensitive end-use applications.
The TERNAL® range offers the following products:

To obtain optimum resistance to abrasion and corrosion, the use of ALAG® aluminate aggregates is recommended.
Since 2006, Kerneos has augmented its TERNAL® line with the Peramin® range of polymer powders (polycarboxylates, sulphonated melamine and polyols): these super-plasticisers and shrinkage reduction agents improve rheology in the formulation, thereby contributing to a better surface appearance (flatness, aesthetic) and greater durability.
With its TERNAL® product line for mortar formulations, especially designed for floor priming, tiling, repairs to concrete, wall priming and finishing…augmented by the Peramin® range of powder additives, Kerneos is demonstrating its strategy aiming at strengthening the development of calcium aluminate-based innovative solutions bringing improved performance to its customers. Kerneos has consequently successfully become a preferred supplier for the construction chemistry industry.
