EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE LEVELS FOR DEMANDING APPLICATION ENVIRONMENTS
Mining is a very demanding sector, in which the imperatives of productivity and profitability are constantly challenged by the nature of the terrain. More than in any other sector, the rapidity with which concrete can be placed and its durability in an extreme environment are determining factors.
With their specific properties, the aluminous cements and derived products offered by Kerneos achieve exceptional performance levels which are often indispensible to mining operations.
There are three forms of Kerneos products used in the mining industry:
1. Binders, used to manufacture fast-setting mortar and concrete showing exceptional durability in an aggressive environment;
2. Pre-formulated mortar or concrete, used to obtain specific properties;
3. Reagents in a wide range of products formulated by laboratory technicians specialised in mining applications in order to meet a whole range of diverse needs.
Aluminous cements are used in a wide range of applications where their specific properties are in high demand:
- Fast-setting concrete is used when a short turnaround time is necessary, for example in traffic lanes, securing of operations areas, base slab of machinery, etc.
- Concrete with exceptional resistance to abrasion and shocks, for drop chutes, unloading zones, protection of mineral silos, etc.
- Acid corrosion resistant concrete, capable of withstanding run-off waters with a pH = 4, or even pH ≥ 3.5;
- Mineral reagent, allowing for the rapid hardening of space arching/covering products;
- Active ingredient in cement anchoring capsules which lower stress bearing time to 60 minutes;
- Active ingredient in sludge consolidation products preparing their removal by mechanical processes;
- Reagents in injected grouting or filling mortar where rapid hardening is essential.
The aluminous cement based products manufactured by Kerneos may be applied by various techniques, according to the needs and the applications concerned: onsite pouring, dry or wet spraying, long-distance pumping, injection into solid masses, etc. Likewise, the kinetics of setting and hardening may be modified over a wide range of time as required, from near instant setting to setting over more than 24 hours.
_ Calcium aluminate concrete minimizes maintenance and work stoppage, thus considerably improving the cost/efficiency ratio. Thanks to calcium aluminate cement and concrete, and especially CIMENT FONDU®, mining engineers throughout the world have thus been able to find cost effective solutions to a wide array of complicated situations where the performance offered by standard Portland cements is insufficient.
- Increasing the durability of structures and reducing the maintenance requirements (ore passes, floors, ramps, silos, etc.),
- Minimizing maintenance time when effecting repairs or the placing of structures (base slabs for machinery, silos, floors, general upkeep of concrete, etc.),
- Impermeability – injection.

The Kerneos products used throughout the mining industry vary depending on the country and the specific requirements. The following are the most popular products:
CIMENT FONDU®
Fast setting binder, resistance to corrosion and high and low temperatures.
FONDUMINE XR
A very reactive binder used by mining industry formulators for the production of anchoring cartridges, high sheer resistance filler grouting, structural grouting and grouting for structural membranes.
ALAG®
Synthetic aggregate for refractory applications and the manufacture of concrete presenting high resistance to abrasion, shocks and corrosion.
FONDAG®
Pre-mixed aluminous cement concrete offering excellent resistance to abrasion and corrosion as well as stability when exposed to heat and temperatures up to 1100°C.
FONDUCRETE products
Pre-mixed concrete component of CIMENT FONDU® as well as of the synthetic aggregate ALAG® and appropriate natural aggregates. This concrete provides durable protection against shocks and abrasion.
RB GROUT
Multi-use grouting, resistant to chemical aggression and used for anchoring and grouting injection applications.
MINEXPRESS
Pre-mixed grouting used as a binder in underground construction of vehicle communications, off and on ramps.
MINERAL SPONGE®
Pre-mixed grouting used as a binder for fine aggregates or as a hardening agent for sludge consolidation.
