Floor preparation systems
Floor systems offer multiple advantages. They are easy and safe to apply and ensure high productivity and reliable performance. Aluminate technology enhances the most demanding properties of the following applications:

  • Coatings for floor-sealing and smoothing
  • Self-levelling screeds
  • Rapid drying screeds
  • Industrial floors
  • Decorative screeds

Adhesives and grouts
To achieve good adhesion between ceramic, natural stone, marble and glass tiles and a wide variety of supports (concrete slab, cement or anhydrite screed, wood, ceramic tiles, PVC).

  • Rapid set tile adhesives
    The tile-layer wants to save time, and the user expects a rapid return to service.
    These mortars have been specifically developed to allow craftsmen to lay and grout tiles on the same day.
  • Adhesives for natural stone and marble
    To complement the floor appearance (often of high value), the adhesive must combine high performance for adhesion and aesthetics.
  • Fluid adhesives
    Fluid adhesives allow greater ease of application and use with large format tiles.
  • Grouts
    Calcium aluminate technology is essential here.
    Grouts play a critical role in the finished appearance (both ceramic and stone tiles), to avoid any imperfections. They are compatible with the most pigments.

Technical mortars
The repair of precast concrete, waterproofing and repairs to road surfaces all need specialty mortars with high requirements in terms of performance, durability, reliability, productivity and ease of use. Four major families of application benefit particularly when calcium aluminate binders are used:

Priming and finishing walls and facades
Here again, calcium aluminate technology proves its worth in the primers for interior walls before they receive a coating and external wall protection. In the latter case, "EIFS", external insulation finishing systems, and the decoration of facades are applications in which performance in terms of aesthetics, durability and productivity are critical.

When used as pure binders (i.e. not mixed with other mineral binders), aluminous cements offer many advantages by comparison with Portland cements:

  • similar setting time followed by rapid hardening
  • much better resistance to corrosion and abrasion.

Mixed in different proportions with Portland cement, calcium sulphates and admixtures, they contribute unique properties to the most demanding building chemistry formulations, such as controlled shrinkage or rapid drying.

Products

The TERNAL® range developed by Kerneos meets the specific needs of building chemistry formulators in terms of consistency, colour and reactivity. It offers a wide choice of characteristics and specifications guaranteed by the Quality Management System:

  • Reactivity
    The reactivity of aluminous cements depends primarily on the mineralogical composition, fineness and particle size distribution. The CA and C12A7 phases being the principal reactive phases, specifications have been defined for the C12A7/CA ratio of all products in the TERNAL® range.
    At the same time, Kerneos continues to invest in the best production equipment, process management tools, and quality control systems.
  • Colours and aesthetic properties
    Where the aesthetic properties of a material are critical, the colour of calcium aluminates plays a key role in such applications. Special process control and colour specifications have been defined for the TERNAL® product range to meet for the most sensitive end-use applications.

To obtain optimum resistance to abrasion and corrosion, the use of ALAG® aluminate aggregates is recommended.

Since 2006, Kerneos has supplemented its TERNAL® offer with Peramin® range additives:

  • polycarboxylate superplasticisers
  • melamine superplasticisers
  • shrinkage reducing agents
  • defoaming agents
  • rheological additives accelerator.

These additives are specially developed to enhance the performance of calcium aluminate cement-rich formulations improving rheology, surface appearance (flatness, aesthetics) and durability.

With its TERNAL® range for mortar formulations, especially designed for floor priming, tiling, repairs to concrete, wall priming and finishing, augmented by the Peramin® range of powder additives, Kerneos is demonstrating its strategy of strengthening the development of calcium aluminate-based innovative solutions.
The aim is to provide formulators with specific tools to improve and control the rheology , fluidity and performance of Portland cement as well as both calcium aluminate and calcium sulphate-based dry mortars.
